Android (Phone, Tablet, TV)

Odeion has a single universal Android app that runs on phones, tablets, Android TV, and Google TV. The app automatically switches to a TV-optimized interface with remote-friendly navigation and “Watch Next” integration when launched on a TV device.

While Odeion is in active development, the Android app is distributed through a Google Play closed test. A public Play Store release is planned once the app exits closed testing. You can also sideload the APK directly if you’d rather skip Google Play entirely.

Google requires testers to opt in via a Google Group before they can see the closed test on Google Play.

  1. Sign in to the Google account you use on your Android device.
  2. Join the Odeion testers Google Group. Membership is open, no approval needed.
  3. Wait a few minutes for Google Play to pick up your membership, then open the Odeion app on Google Play on your device. You should see the option to install or join the test.
  4. Tap Install. Odeion will appear in your app drawer.

If Google Play still shows “item not found” after a few minutes, sign out and back into the Play Store, or restart the device. Play sometimes caches group membership.

The same Google Group membership grants you access on Android TV and Google TV. Search for “Odeion” in the Play Store on your TV, or install it from your phone’s Play Store and select your TV as the target device.

If you’d prefer not to use Google Play, you can install the APK directly. The same APK works on phones, tablets, and TV devices.

  1. Download the latest APK from the Odeion releases page. (Coming soon. For now, request a build via contact@odeion.app.)
  2. On your device, allow installs from your file manager or browser in Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps.
  3. Open the APK and tap Install.

Sideloaded builds do not auto-update. You’ll need to download and install new APKs manually.

The Android app supports HLS playback via ExoPlayer with quality selection, subtitle and audio track switching, skip intro/credits, next episode auto-play, Picture-in-Picture, background audio, downloads for offline playback, playlists, content requests, Watch Together, and Chromecast. Downloads and Picture-in-Picture are not available on the TV interface.

You can sign in by entering your server URL and credentials, or by using a device link code generated from a device where you’re already signed in. Device code linking is strongly recommended on Android TV.

The fastest way to report a bug is via the in-app bug reporter, which automatically attaches logs and device info. You can also email contact@odeion.app. See the support page for details.
